Anthony started zooming in on bird life during his student years, in the early 90s. But his focus changed from feathers to fins when he was introduced to the marvels of underwater photography, ironically whilst managing game farms in the Lowveld. After investing in his own underwater housing, he became completely immersed in the world of underwater photography. His lens
eventually surfaced to explore beyond the natural wonders and nuances of this nautical wonderland; and so he splashed into the aquatic sport scene.
My main feeling was to try keep it involved with water, as I love the effect water gives to an image when combined with action.
After being invited to second friends in the Dusi Canoe Marathon, his interest was captured, not only by the sport itself, but also by the photographic opportunities it presented. As time lapsed, his photography skills took on a wider angle, enriching his portfolio to include a range of sports to test his shutter speed, including surf-ski racing, beach soccer, mountain biking, trail running and lifesaving.
Another interest which I have worked on in later years is architectural photography. I love shooting in low light conditions, balancing outside ambient light with interior lighting.
Applying his skills and talents commercially soon followed, and he has since clicked his way around the country and various exotic travel destinations; now incorporating time lapse, panoramas and virtual tours.
There is nothing monochrome about Anthony Grotes photographic career to date, which is saturated with high-profile media exposure, an impressive list of clients and number of prestigious awards.
